What is Japandi style, and how can you incorporate it at home? As you might have guessed from the name, Japandi is a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian styles. It takes the clean lines and earthy colour palette of Japanese design and combines them with the pared-back comfort and cosiness of Scandinavia’s well-known Hygge approach.

The style is practical and uncluttered, creating a simple and serene atmosphere which embraces nature, texture, and neutral colours. Livingetc magazine says “The typical Japandi home features clean lines, simple shapes and a minimalistic aesthetic”.

How can you bring this style into your home?

Beige interior finishing touches

Embrace Beige

Choose natural colours that aren’t too bright; stick to muted tones like beige, sand and oatmeal.

Opt for cream where you might usually have white, to keep a warm, calm and neutral palette. If you feel you want more contrast or an accent colour, try to find a pale shade that won’t jar with your pared-back palette.

DeClutter

To create the Japandi feel, you’ll need to clear your space... and your mind.

This style is simple, mindful, uncluttered and purposeful. As Laila Rietbergen points out “almost all decorations have a purpose … they are functional items, like ceramic cups, a teapot or books.”

Simple aesthetics combined with functionality is the order of the day; think sliding doors, handleless storage, beautifully crafted tableware, and seemingly effortless window coverings.

Invest in Quality You’ll Keep

With Japandi décor, there is a focus on high quality items that will last for years to come. Forget ‘fast fashion’. Choosing long-lasting quality over quantity is a decision that promotes sustainability and fits well with the ethos of eco-minded homeowners.

When it comes to sustainability, we’re an expert in our field. As well as producing window coverings that promote quality and longevity, Luxaflex® also has countless certifications for green manufacturing practices, and even created the world's first fabric for roller blinds made from recycled shoreline plastic.

Don’t Be Dazzled

When it comes to lighting a Japandi style space, you’ll want to welcome in lots of natural light during the day and have warm, cosy ambient lighting at night. The translucent fabric panels of Luxaflex LightLine® Roller Blinds are perfect for creating an attractive light-filtering effect that maintains privacy, while still allowing a softly diffused natural daylight through when closed.

Touchable Textures

Opt for organic natural materials with rich and earthy textures, such as ceramics, dried plants, linens, concrete and wood. Choose paper, cotton and bamboo finishes for authentic Japandi style.

The space should feel stripped back and minimalist without seeming bare or characterless.

The translucent fabric of our Luxaflex LightLine® Roller Blinds may appear delicate and paper-like – in keeping with the Japandi style - but is actually incredibly durable and moisture resistant, ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.

Simple Style, Clever Technology

Introducing Japandi style doesn’t have to mean going back to basics. You can still enjoy modern comforts, but technology should blend seamlessly into the space.

Consider built-in speakers, rather than free-standing sound systems for example.

PowerView® Automation brings seamless style, and allows you to program your Luxaflex shades to automatically open, close or adjust on a schedule. It integrates smoothly with other smart home systems and speakers including Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit for voice-activated control of window coverings.
